July 1, 2015

Denton, TX - First United Bank’s Vice President, Mike Pope was recently awarded the “Rotarian of the Year” award. This prestigious award incorporates over 66 Rotary Clubs and 2800 Rotarians from Rotary District 5790. Denton Community Bank President Jay Ross commented, “We are very proud of Mike and this is a great example of our officers living our purpose and values on a daily basis.”

Mike PopeThe Rotarian of the Year is awarded to a single Rotarian by the District Governor every year. Pope was heavily involved as the Chairman for the district’s Four Way Test Speech Contest where he coordinated the efforts of 39 Rotary Clubs’ high school speech contests, as well as arranging and attending three regional contests. The top two winning students of each regional contest were the finalists at the District Conference in Wichita Falls. The district had 158 students participate this year as they wrote their speeches and then gave a five minute timed speech on “What the Rotary Four Way Test Means to Me.”

The Denton Rotary Club also honored Pope with the Distinguished Service Award. This award includes a nomination and then voting by the members of the Denton club. In addition to the Four Way Test Speech Contest Pope has assisted with the Flag Program, and leading the song at weekly meetings. Pope also introduced and chaired the Exceptional Student of the Month program since its inception in 2010. This program honors a special needs student from Denton ISD’s Special Education program each month and is a club favorite. Pope said, “I get tremendous pleasure being of service to others. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to continue that service through First United Bank and for our community.” Pope joined Rotary International in 1985 and has served as president for two different clubs. “Our guest speaker, Amanda Wirtz said it best at the Rotary District 5790 Conference; “Service is not something I do; it is the life I live.” Pope continued.

Pope currently resides in Princeton Texas and has been married to his wife Beverly for 37 years. They have 3 adult children and 5 grandchildren. Pope also serves on the Board of Directors for the Denton Chamber of Commerce, teaches a men’s Bible study class, and sings in the church choir at Faith Baptist in Princeton. “I enjoy golf, visiting our grandkids in Illinois, and cruising too far off lands with my wife.” Pope commented.
