Faith Fuels Freedom: An Independence Day Reflection

Faith June 11, 2025 By First United Bank

What does freedom mean to you?

For many Americans, freedom is more than a right. It’s a gift and a responsibility. At the heart of this freedom is faith.

Faith Lights the Path to Justice

What guides us when decisions are tough and the stakes are high? Faith serves as our compass. It nudges us toward justice and righteousness, even when the world says, “Go your own way.” Galatians 5:13 reminds us, “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.”

Here’s the truth: When we use freedom to serve, we strengthen our nation - local community by local community.

Community Grows Where Faith Thrives

No one stands alone. Faith brings us together, forming communities bound by compassion and care. Churches, synagogues, mosques, and all houses of worship unite neighbors in shared purpose. This spirit of togetherness builds a nation strong at its core.

Think about it. When disaster strikes, who shows up first? Often, it’s people of faith, driven by the call to love their neighbors.

Resilience and Hope in Times of Trial

Freedom is tested. History is filled with moments when our nation faced uncertainty. Yet faith breathes hope into hopeless situations. It whispers, “Keep going. There’s more ahead.” Our stories are filled with men and women who stood tall, drawing strength from their unwavering faith, which fueled their courage to face challenges, overcome obstacles, and inspire those around them. Their belief became the foundation of their resilience, allowing them to persevere even in the most difficult times.

What keeps a people moving forward when the way is uncertain? Faith.

Religious Freedom Is the Foundation

Religious liberty isn’t just one freedom among many. It’s the bedrock. The freedom to worship according to your conscience is uniquely American. Matthew 22:21 says, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.” We are called to honor our civic responsibilities while staying true to our spiritual convictions.

This balance is key. It allows faith to thrive without fear, inspiring generations to pursue what is right, no matter the cost.

The Call to Action

This Independence Day, pause and reflect. Authentic faith is not a private matter alone. When faith is coupled with action, it shapes how you live, how you serve, and how you love.

Ask yourself:

How can I serve my neighbors?

How does my faith inspire courage?

What am I doing to strengthen my community?

Faith and freedom are not just parts of our past. They are the very reasons America's forefathers left Europe seeking a new world. They are the sparks that will fuel our freedom for generations to come.

Celebrate that. Live it. And use your freedom to lift up those around you, in love.
