The Greatest of These is Love

Faith January 23, 2026 By First United Bank

February is here. Hearts and flowers are everywhere. Valentine's Day puts a spotlight on romantic love. It celebrates grand gestures and passionate feelings. But what if love is something more? What if it's bigger than a box of chocolates or a dozen roses?

The Bible tells us about a different kind of love. A love that endures. A love that changes everything. It says, "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." (1 Corinthians 13:13). This is the love we are called to live out every single day. Not just on February 14th. Not just with a significant other.

This love is for everyone. It's for the coworker who challenges you. It's for the family member you disagree with. It’s for the neighbor you barely know. This is the love that matters most.

How do we live this out? How do we show this powerful love in our daily lives?

It starts by choosing unity over division. We live in a world that thrives on disagreement. It's easy to focus on what separates us—different opinions, different backgrounds, different beliefs. But love calls us to a higher standard. Love asks us to find common ground. Love compels us to listen, to understand, and to show grace.

Think about a difficult conversation with a coworker. Your first instinct might be to defend your position. To prove you are right. But what if you chose love instead? What if you decided to listen first? To truly hear their perspective without planning your rebuttal. That is love in action. It doesn't mean you have to agree. It means you choose to respect and value the person over the argument.

This is the love that rebuilds. It’s the love that bridges the gap in a strained family relationship. Maybe years of unspoken frustrations have built a wall between you and a loved one. Love tears down that wall, one small act at a time. It’s a phone call just to say hello. It’s offering a word of encouragement instead of criticism. It's choosing forgiveness over holding a grudge. These are not grand gestures, but they are powerful. They are the seeds of reconciliation.

This love is an act of obedience. It is the greatest commandment. It is a choice we must make again and again.

This Valentine's season, let’s look beyond the fleeting romance. Let’s embrace a love that is deeper, wider, and more transformative. A love that doesn't depend on feelings but on a conscious decision.

Choose to see people through the lens of love. Choose to set aside differences. Choose to build bridges, not walls. Start today. Show this love to your family, your neighbors, and your coworkers.

Let your faith and hope be the foundation, but let love be the legacy you build. Because the greatest of these is, and always will be, love.
